Spider Vein Treatments

Sclerotherapy
Sclerotherapy is the injection of an irritating substance into a vein for the purpose of eliminating that vein. It is commonly used for the treatment of unsightly spider veins, but can also be used in certain situations for the elimination of larger veins. Sclerotherapy is the treatment of choice for elimination of bulging veins in the hands and can usually be accomplished in one treatment.

How does sclerotherapy work?
The injected substances irritate the inside of the vein causing an inflammatory reaction . The vein collapses and eventually disappears.

How many treatments are necessary?
Depending on the size of the vein to be eliminated, the number of treatments varies between 1 and 6, and averages around 3. Fading is usually noted with each treatment. 4-6 weeks is allowed in between treatments to allow complete resolution of the healing process.

Treatment of larger veins
Sclerotherapy can also be used for  treatment of the larger reticular “feeder” veins that appear blue under  the skin. It is often advisable to treat these veins as they are the source of pressure to the small spider veins. Unwanted larger veins on the top of the hand and vulvar varicosities are also effectively treated with sclerotherapy.

Laser treatment for spider veins
Laser treatment is very effective in reducing and eliminating unsightly facial veins. Multiple treatments are usually necessary, but fading is accomplished with each treatment. With laser therapy, the vessel walls of spider veins absorb heat and collapse. Facial veins are considered a cosmetic condition and treatment is not covered by insurance.

Can the laser be used for broken vessels in the nose, chin and cheek areas?
Yes. The facial spider veins are very effectively treated with laser therapy. Increased redness may be seen at the end of a treatment session, but fading of the veins will be noted in days following treatment. For best results, multiple treatments may be necessary.
